Acrostic Poem, Tsunami

Tsunamis are unusual waves that can cause bad damage.

Sizes of tsunamis can be quite large.

Unusual changes in the ocean can tell you that a tsunami might be coming.

Never stay to watch a tsunami.

Always be alert at the beach or at other coastal areas.

Move quickly but safely to a higher ground if there is a tsunami coming.

If the earth shakes move to a higher ground. A tsunami may soon shrike your area.

Earthquakes are horrifying.

An earthquakes rumbles our world.

Real earthquakes can shake the ground.

Tectonic plates can cause earthquakes.

Huge earthquakes are very big.

Quick get under a table.

U.s.a is as big as a tectonic plate.

A crack can get so deep and wide.

Kids get scared so they cry.

Extreme horrifying cracks.

   Facts on waves

• Local shore winds can also produce waves, but they can also destroy the quality of the breaking waves.

• In a way offshore winds are a sort of a counterbalance. Swell comes from miles away.

• On shore winds are typically known for creating choppy and bumpy waves because their effect is added to the direction of the wave.

• Waves make their way through the ocean and are affected by the differences in the ocean floor.

• In deep low pressure systems, wind speed is greater and more waves are generated by the power .

• Western weka are the most common subspecies and are found throughout the Marlborough Sounds, scattered in other regions of Nelson.

• Buff weka were once common on the eastern South Island. They have been reintroduced to The Pekekara and Wakatipu islands

• Weka occupy a range of habitats including forests, sub alpine grassland, sand dunes, rocky shores, and even modified. The fact that some weka populations persist in highly modified habitats suggests that they can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions..

• Moas were unique among flightless birds, having lost any trace that they once had wings.
• Not even tiny wing bones or a wishbone were left.
• As well as bones, mummified moas and well preserved feathers have been found.
• Fragments have been found at many sites, including prehistoric Maori settlements, where the eggs had been cooked and eaten.
• Related to the ostriches and emus, there were 11 species of moa, from the turkey-sized Euryapteryx curtus to the huge Dinornis giganteus.

A Report On Land Transport

Land Transport is the most commonly used transport is New Zealand.

The one wheeled unicycle is called a Monowheel but it is not commonly used because it is very difficult to ride.However, the two wheeled scooters,bicycles and motorbikes are widely used by young people to do some tricks at the skatepark.

The three wheeled tricycle,rickshaws,lyric and Spyder Roadsters are not really used by the people in New Zealand.The Rickshaws are three wheeled motorised transport widely used in the major cities in Asian countries to carry passengers. Some of these Rickshaws are very colourful.

There are some superfast cars that are four wheeled. Some of these  four wheeled vehicles are use as emergency transport.These vehicles are the  Ambulance and the Police Cars.

Some of the six wheeled land transport are buses and trucks. The buses are used for transporting passengers while the trucks are use for transporting cargo from place to place.

The  Container Trucks, Oil Tankers,  Logging Trucks, and Trains are some of the ten or more wheeled vehicles.They are used for transporting  heavy loads over long distances and the trained is for transporting passengers as well.

Land Transport is very important  since people need to travel from place to place to work or for holidays. Without transport, life can be very slow and boring.

WALT: write poems.

Taste Buds

Tasting your food brings out your saliva

And so does drinking hot tea, coffee or the juice of a guava

Sometimes you’ll brush your teeth so that those taste buds feel fresh

Tell your friends and everybody that your tongue is not in a mess

Everybody got thousands of cells so you'd better get brushing before it becomes trash

Brush your teeth every day and night

Use a good brush and scrape your tongue bright

Doubt that you will have any bad breath
So be happy because your taste buds are in good health

A Piece of Paradise by  Leonie Thorpe

This story is about the Rain God and the Sun God. The Rain God looked down at the village and saw that they were a very happy village and the Rain God was proud of the stream that she had created.

One day they had a argument over whose food gardens were bigger and better. They decided to settle the argument by having a competition on growing food in their areas.  The prize for winning the competition was the four bright stars in sky known as the Southern Cross.

At the end of season none of them had any good crops to show each other because all the crops needed sunshine and rain. They agreed that they needed each for growing their crops.

The four bright stars were set up in the sky in the south.

The characters in his story are the Rain God and the Sun God.

This story takes place in the sky.

I like this story because it talks about the Rain God and the  Sun God and the Southern Cross Stars. This story  is very impressing.

This story is about  a family that went tramping in the bushes.They were so bored and  they had nothing to do so one of the characters named Sam went out to get some firewood from the bushes.When Sam came back with the firewood one of the wood  had a Huhu beetle on it. When they saw the Huhu beetle they made a game called Beetle and they  played the game so they were not bored anymore.

The characters in this story are Dad,Sam,Matt and Phoebe.

This story takes place at home.

I like this story because I have now learnt a new game.

Catch Of The Day By Kathy Taylor

This story is about a family going fishing at the wharf so  that mum could  cook fish for dinner.

The characters in the story are Campbell, Polly, Josh and Dad. The story takes place at the wharf near the sea.

I like this story because I love going fishing with my family as well. I felt good when Polly caught a fish because Josh and Campbell were not being kind to her while they were fishing.

Room 9’s MOTAT Visit By Melenaite

Two weeks ago the Senior School students from Glenbrae School went to the Auckland MOTAT to study  transport.

First, we all walked down to the school hall and sat in our class lines.Then Mrs Raj spoke to us about the trip. Then Ms Elia came in and told us that  one bus was going to be late.

Room 10 and half of room 7 went in the first bus. When the second bus came, Room 9 and half of room 7 went in the second bus.

When we got there, we all got out of the bus and Anna, the MOTAT Educator Anna took us to a spare  room and that is where we had our assembly. Then we sat down and Anna told us what we were going to do .

First room 9 had morning tea and after that we went on a Tram ride and it  took us 15 minutes.

When we got back,we  walked back to the assembly room and waited for Anna to come and take us  to the class she was going to take. We went to a different room and Anna gave us a transport puzzle. Our groups had to sort it out and put it in order.

When we had finished,  we packed up the puzzle and Anna took us around and showed us some of the transport  they used in the olden days. After that, we went back to the assembly room and had lunch.

Finally we had a tour with our parent helpers. We went to the Games Zone and tried some of the games. Then we went through the Mirror Maze.

When it was 2 o’clock, we went back to the assembly room and got our bags and lined up to go to the bus.Then we walked up to the bus got in for our trip back to school. We reached school at half past two.

I really enjoyed the trip to the MOTAT because I learnt a lot about transport.
