Acrostic Poem, Christchurch Earthquake

Christchurch Earthquake

Christchurch Earthquake

Crumbling buildings
Humans screaming
Roads cracking
Intense shaking
Sad families
Trembling people
Churches breaking
Hurt people
Unsightly liquefaction
Red blood all over the place
Christchurch Cathedral spire tumbling
Houses falling

Earth rolling
Aftershocks continue
Rubble all over Christchurch
Train lines buckled
Hygiene falling
Quakes are devastating
Under the rubble, trapped people
Asking will it stop
Kind rescue crews
Endless quakes

The Day Mary Shook the Karaka Tree by Jan Farr

This Story takes place at the house and at the karaka tree.

In this story the Mum and Dad play tennis with Pete and Wynne. Mum and Wynne keep talking and Wynne hits the ball into the karaka tree.

My favourite part of the book is when the ball goes into the karaka tree.

I recommend this book for people who like narratives.

How Waves Are Made, Karl

How Waves are Made

  • Waves are mainly a product of the wind.
  • Low pressure systems are responsible for creating good and strong waves.
  • The friction created by strong winds helps to form energy waves that will travel thousands of miles until hitting final obstacles, which means, coastal areas where we live.
  • In deep low pressure systems, wind speed is greater and more waves are generated by the power of the gusts.
  • If winds created in low pressure systems keep blowing the surface of the ocean for a long time, swells will be bigger because energy is accumulated in all waves produced.

Story Review, Karl

Big Shift by Jacqui Brown

This story is about a family that splits up and the dad stays back on the farm in the countryside while the mum and the three children go and stay in Wellington. The characters in the story are Dad, Mum, Terei, Cherie, the Narrator, Tomo, Meilai, the two kids who beat up Tomo and the two kids who were tagging. Tomo, Meilai and the Narrator become friends when the Narrator stopped the two kids who are beating up Tomo. Tome introduced the Narrator to Meilai. In the end Meilai lives in Auckland, and Tomo and the Narrator are in college in Wellington.
The story takes place on the farm in the countryside and in Wellington.
I like  this story because it shows how some people feel when  their parents split up and they struggle to keep their family together.

American Grand Canyon, Karl

America Grand Canyon

On Tuesday we went to Grand Canyon to walk in the Canyon. We went on the South Kaibab Trail. We saw some rock squirrels and birds, but not a lot else.  The top of the trail is at 2,195m and we went to Ooh Aah Point which is at 1,965.  The trail follows an exposed ridge line.  I felt scared when we went down as I was a bit worried I might fall off the edge and the path was a bit slippery at times with the small gravel on it.  Occasionally there were strong gusts of winds and it whipped up it stirred up dust.

We used the free shuttle buses to travel round parts of the rim, stopping and looking to see down into the canyon.   We also walked along part of the rim and were able to see the Colorado River at the bottom (but only from some parts) and also the bridge at the bottom of the South Kaibab Trail.  We went to the Yavapai Geology Museum to listen to a Park Ranger talk called Geo-glimpse, which was about how the canyon was formed.

After dinner, we went to the Shrine of the Ages to another Ranger talk.  Ranger Ron was pretending to be Captain John Hance who was known as the greatest liar of all time, and was the first white person to live at Grand Canyon.  One of the stories he used to tell was to look out for men, especially young men, but old too, as one day there was a young man at Grand Canyon strolling about and he was telling Captain Hance that he had the newest of everything.  The newest thing in the world were on his feet - Indian soled rubber boots! (the boots had rubber soles on them).  He said his boots had big grippiness, and could grip on to rocks.  He started to demonstrate the grippiness by leaping from rock to rock, and then, on his last jump, he jumped right into the canyon!  "Ahhhh", he screamed on his way down, and he landed on his Indian rubber soled boots and "Ahhhh" he screamed on his way back up!  Once he was back up, Captain Hance tried to grab him, but "Ahhh" again, and his bouncing continued all night.  In the morning, Captain Hance's friend said "I can't take this any more" and Captain Hance asked "What are you going to do about it?" and he replied "I'm going to shoot him".  As the friend was about to take the shot, Captain Hance smacked the rifle out of his hand and then said "Grab me my lasso".  Once he had his lasso, he swung it around and the next time the young man bounced up, he lassoed him right out of his boots and onto safe ground.  So, they didn't shoot the young man, but they had to shoot the boots as they kept bouncing!  I really enjoyed the talk that Ranger Ron gave, and laughed practically the whole way through it!

When we left the evening talk, it started to snow.  The flakes were very tiny white balls which only melted when we touched them.  I don't think there was enough to settle.

We stopped in for hot chocolate at the Masick Lodge, then headed off to bed.

2 wheelers are bicycles, motorbikes and Segways. First we will talk about bicycles. Bicycles are 2 wheeled forms of transport that you use your energy to control. There are pedals on it.

Motorbikes are like bicycles but have a motor in it. Motorbikes vary in sizes. Some motorbikes race on the concrete, some on dirt and some don’t race.

Cup Cakes by Karl

Cupcakes

On Wednesday we watched Breakfast News on TV One. The news reporters had cupcakes with blue icing for William and Kate's son Prince George Alexander Louis. We decided to make some too! First we mixed the dry ingredients. Next we added the liquid and dampened it all. Then we put the cases in the muffin tin and poured the mixture in. After it cooled, we iced them with blue icing (it was a boy) and put a yellow pebble on top for the crown. They were YUMMY!

The World of Ferns by Rupert Alchin.

This article is all  about ferns. It tells us about what  they are, where in a bush you find them, what is inside them. The scientific word for fern is Pteridophyte. The  fleshy underground stem of  a fern is called a Rhizome. There are 12,000 species of ferns worldwide. The xylem tissue carries water and the phloem tissue carries food for the plants that it is in. This article has amazing facts about ferns and I recommend that all students who do not know about ferns should read it.
